I have not done one of these post in a long time. I wrote this as an article for the Shining Stars Magazine that I often either write for or submit photos too. My sisters have ended up on the front cover of the magazine before, not something they thought would ever happen! And as I am away now (providing this published when it was meant to) and for the rest of this month, I thought I could schedule this to post then, because there is no chance of me posting anything else.

Our family bakes a loaf of bread almost every day (in the bread maker). Occasionally if there is some event coming up or we are having people over we will bake two or three more. Among our church friends and family The Farrelly’s Bread is quite famous, and everyone goes back for more. We eat some of our bread every day; we dribble honey or jam over a nice soft slice with chewy crusts or wrap sausages or steaks in it, toast it and eat it with vegemite and butter, or as a toasted squash sandwich, or whatever we feel like that day. I think that the bible, the word of God, is just like The Farrelly’s Bread. We eat our bread every day, it sustains us. So also we should ‘eat’ the word of God every day. Our bread we eat each day gives us energy to continue on. So also does the word of God.

We really enjoy eating our bread too and eating it in all different ways. Likewise the word of God is something we need to take into ourselves each day. We need to ‘eat’ it to sustain our spiritual life. As it says in Jeremiah 15:16, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts.”

I would get very hungry if I could only eat bread on Sundays and bible study nights, even if I ate something else instead I would really miss eating a slice of our home baked bread each day. And it may not be a good for me either. So while reading other books is nice I think we should all take a bite of spiritual bread each day. Just as I eat bread each day, I also need to ‘eat’ the word of God. Daily bible reading will help sustain our spiritual life and will strengthen our spirits.

Often we don’t just eat bread once a day but a few times a day. Often we eat it for morning or afternoon tea, like reading bits of scriptures through the day, listening to bible based preachers talking and teaching on bible passages. Sometimes we will even have bread for tea as well, maybe dipped in soup or with some warm vegetable and meat stew on top. So also we can be ‘eating’ God’s word many times a day. Just like we need to eat food during the day we need to read the word because like bread it is a staple food for living a happy healthy life.

When and how each member of our family eats bread each day looks different and some do more so than others. I does not look the same for everyone in our family and it does not have to, but we all eat the bread. We all feed on the word of God and delight in it, sometimes alone, other times together, because we all belong to God. Often we don’t remember what we ate three days ago, neither do we remember what we read, but what we read in the word helped get us to today, and sustained and strengthened us so that we are where we are now.

Because as it says in Matthew 4:4, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

The wait is finally over, for those who like me got ARCs of this book anyway. For everyone else it is almost here! And I am so excited because this book belongs to such a good series/trilogy. Obviously this is my honest review of this amazing book.

What book am I talking about? A Time To Rise of course by the lovely Nadine Brandes. I am honored to take part in her book tour.

I don't want this post to be spoilery for those who have not read the first books so here is the synopsis of book one. You can find the synopsis for A Time To Rise on Goodreads.

How would you live if you knew the day you'd die?

Parvin Blackwater has wasted her life. At only seventeen, she has one year left according to the Clock by her bedside.

In a last-ditch effort to make a difference, she tries to rescue Radicals from the crooked justice system. But when the authorities find out about her illegal activity, they cast her through the Wall -- her people's death sentence.

What she finds on the other side about the world, about eternity, and about herself changes Parvin forever and might just save her people.
But her Clock is running out.

A Time To Rise was worth the wait, I was expecting this to be as amazing as the other two and it certainly lived up to my expectations. There were many elements of faith in the other books but even more in this one, and by this book in the series I had grown to expect that so it was lovely. It is really refreshing to read a book that is saturated in biblical faith. But it also all applied and was necessary to the story; it has a reason and purpose. It makes this novel so much better and unique. It is an inspiring read.

This story pulled my emotions every way. The characters are all so real Parvin, Tawny, Solomon, Willow and their struggles so relatable and I really liked how some of them changed so much through this series and yet are still the same … Skelley Chase… The theme of forgiveness was powerful too. And many of the side characters were quite intriguing people as well, with their own stories, that we never really heard in this book. (because that would be unnecessary) But it made for good characters.

There were quite a few surprising twists that I did not see coming, at all. I never even suspected there would be twists in those places. The story had me flicking through pages… e-book pages anyway as fast as I could read. A few bits had me laughing aloud.. and laughing/crying at other times.

Some horrible things happen, in the story. (Realism peoples) Some people do many horrible things; some good people make bad choices. But there are no gruesome detailed descriptions of the violence. So I really can’t say there was anything I did not like about this book, except for everything I loved of course!

I find most romance in books is painful to read, but in A Time To Rise (and the other two books, but particularly in this one where it is there a lot more) the romance is lovely and beautiful and a wonderful example of how a relationship like that should really be. It made for some heart wrenching moments.

The story is just beautiful and so full of faith and the ending satisfied me. I am just trying not to think about how it is now ended. But Nadine did a wonderful job in making the ending sound like a new beginning for the characters while still being a great series ending.

Look at that photo, I even have a signed copy of the first book! Well, a sticker that is signed and in the front cover, but that is just as good!

Now after reading that review you want to buy the book right? So here are some links to the previous books in the Out of Time Trilogy as well as A Time To Rise!

You can find A Time to Die the one it started with all these places:

As for A Time to Speak, possibly my favourite of the three:

And A Time To Rise the third and final book:

If you Pre-Order A Time To Rise you can sign up to get some cool swag -like mini character magnetic bookmarks and other out of time series bookmarks- on this post on Nadine's blog.

And there is going to be a Facebook Party to celebrate the release too, which you should totally join in on because Facebook parties are, in my experience anyway, always so fun. What could not be fun when there are book giveaways and author chats?

That American time then translates to 9am on Wednesday the 19th, if you are in the same time zone as me (Australian Eastern Time Zone UTC+10:00) And then again I just realised there is that horrible thing called daylight saving so that could make it 8am, or 10am, my poor little brain is so confused now, but we will work it out some time before then.
And in case you do not know Nadine here is a little introduction.

I am an adventurer, fusing authentic faith with bold imagination. I never received my Hogwarts letter, but rest assured I’m no Muggle (and would have been in Ravenclaw House, thank you very much.) This Harry Potter super-nerd has been known to eat an entire package of Oreos (family-size) by herself, and watches Fiddler on the Roof at least once a year. I write about brave living, finding purpose, and other worlds soaked in imagination. My dystopian trilogy (The Out of Time Series) challenged me to pursue shalom, which is now my favorite word (followed closely by bumbershoot.) When I’m not taste-testing a new chai or editing fantasy novels, me and my
knight-in-shining armor (nickname: “hubby”)
 are out pursuing adventures.

Nadine Stuff: (which you should check out because she is a most lovely person)
It is finally the time to share the cover of A Time to Rise! For any who do not know A Time to Rise is the third and last book in the Out of Time Series by Nadine Brandes. It is set to be released on the 14th of October 2016 in America which makes it the 15th here in Australia.

But to the point, you want to see the cover. Actually you probably scrolled down and saw it before coming back to read anything.

That is what I do.

So with no more delay I present to you

*insert sound of dramatic music*

*insert imaginary drum roll*

*insert a great gust of wind*

the cover

of

A Time to Rise!

Doesn't it look so good!

Now follows the synopsis which contains spoilers for the previous books so consider yourself warned.

What more can you sacrifice than your life?

Parvin Blackwater is dead.

At least…that’s what the Council—and the world—thinks. But her sacrifice tore down part of the Wall long enough to stir up hope and rebellion in the people. Now she will rise again. Strong, free, and fearless.

Parvin and Solomon must uncover the mysterious clues that Jude left behind in order to destroy the projected Wall once and for all. Meanwhile, the Council schemes to new levels of technology in its attempts to keep the people contained. Can a one-handed Radical and a scarred ex-Enforcer really bring shalom to the world?

So if you have not read the previous books you should forget that you just read that synopsis, and read the other two books now, so you are ready for A Time to Rise when it comes out. The three of them look so good together, I can't wait for them to all sit in a row on my shelf.

Have you read any of Nadine's books?
Do you like dystopian fiction?

I am so glad to live as a Christian. Why? Because we have hope. No other religion gives such assurance of a future as Christianity does. Nothing else can answer all the questions of life as well as God can. I have hope, but even more than hope, the hope I have is a sure hope. One day the world will be destroyed and we will be given a new home, and it will be glorious, I look forward to that day. Though for now there are many trials to go through, I know that the God of Hope walks beside me or if I need him too, he carries me. I also hope that I will learn more about him and how he wants me to live through every experience. I want to choose to be filled with joy on both rainy and sunny days. I hope and pray for the same, for anyone who reads this too.

Each week our family has a memory verse that we learn and this week it is Romans 10:9 which is really easy for me because I already learnt it along with my sisters and some other girls at our Bright Lights (young ladies bible study/discipleship) group. I also made up this picture of it with one of my photos so just had to share it with you all.

I got Out of Darkness Rising by Gillian Bronte Adams for Christmas. I had been wanting to read it for ages, and I was not disappointed by it, except maybe that is was so thin. I wanted it to last longer.

Darkness reigns unchallenged.

For the villagers on the accursed Island, life has only one meaning - death. Bound to the Island by the curse, the villagers suffer beneath the iron claw of the Serpent, daily breathing the poison of his breath and dying to appease his insatiable appetite.

When Marya’s parents are slain by the serpent for their belief in a legendary king, she becomes an outcast. Struggling to survive and avoid the vengeance of the Tribunal, Marya is torn between legend and the harsh reality of the Island. Yet when a forgotten promise springs to life, she cannot help wondering if the old stories might in fact be true. And if they are, will the promise prove stronger than the curse?

The back cover actually gives away a bit more of the story than I would like, but hopefully you will have forgotten it by the time you read this book. If you don't you will still be able to enjoy it immensely. The first sentence is rather good too. As are the cool dragon/serpent pictures inside. (which I did not take photos of...)

This story is an allegory of redemption. Out of Darkness Rising is a short read, sad, and hopeful and beautiful, the writing resounds with one of the world greatest truths. But it does not forget the story or plot. The characters are fairly relatable, although because of the shortness you only get to know them so much. The story, a retelling of the greatest rescue, is epic. But I must again say it felt over too soon, I wish it was longer. Another point to it would be that some of the writing actually reminded me a little of C.S. Lewis' writing.

And the cover is seriously cool too, especially since it is a scene in the story, and because it just is. I do like it when it actually happens in the book though. And as it suggests, there are swords and a dragon in the book.

Have you read any of Gillian Bronte Adams' books?
She has only published two, but there are more coming!

Don't judge a book by its cover.... Personally I really dislike the cover of Unlikely Hero: The Road to Extraordinary by Duncan Robinson. As you can see it is blood red with apparently a sling and stones on it, but when I saw it I thought: oh some nasty medical thing or maybe an eye patch or some glasses for a cyclops that got melted in a furnace. But I was given it for free so I started to read it.

I turned the crisp white pages and looked at the black text, nice and large and with lots of white space for easy reading. I read it, and it is worth reading too. The book is easy to understand and you can hear Pastor Duncan's passion for the topic. The book is challenging. At the end of each chapter it has really good reflection questions and the beginning of a prayer. It does not discus doctrinal things so far as I remember so that should not be a problem for anyone.

As far as I remember I agreed with everything it said so I highly recommend this book. Oh and it also compares people to Han Solo, wookies, Yoda and had a few other Star Wars references so that made it even better.

I will leave you with a few of the quotes I wrote down in my "thoughts and quotes" book, some of them are exactly what was in the book but others were just what I wrote down.... but very similar to things in the book but I now can't remember which were which for sure.

Sometimes we have to spend time in the desert to become, improve or refine who we are destined to be. ~ Duncan Robinson (but slightly reworded)

When you focus on the bright spots in your life they become magnified. If you focus on the negatives, they will also become magnified. ~ Duncan Robinson (possibly an exact quote)

God has given us promises to help us endure hard times with real joy ~ Duncan Robinson......

Have you ever read this book?
Did you know that Duncan is an Australian who now lives in America?

I am currently reading Unlikely Hero:The Road to Extraordinary by Duncan Robinson. It is a great book that I would definitely recommend. The thoughts in this post are my words but the idea was from that book.

And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.  And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.”  When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” ~ Exodus 3:2-4

The question is this: what was so special about that bush, why did it not burn? The answer is nothing. There was nothing special about that ordinary little bush, nothing except for the fact that God chose it.

Often we seem to think we have to be someone special for God to use us for his glory and his kingdom. The bush did not play a long part in God's plan for rescuing the people of Israel. But it played a very important one. Maybe you are just like that little bush. A perfectly ordinary person, but when chosen by God you could be the start of something truly extraordinary.

Sometimes God call us to step out of our comfort zone. I can't imagine a bush enjoying being burned, at least not really burning, that would kill it. This bush did not get consumed though. We probably don't have to face anything as drastic as facing something that will (as far as we know) kill us. But sometimes we need to say yes to God and be that ordinary little bush that he can work through to do something truly extraordinary.

Counted Worthy By Leah E. Good has sat on a shelf in my room for months, as I enjoyed waiting to read it. I knew, well, was fairly sure it would be a really good read, sometimes with books like that I like to have them a while before reading them. When I read this the other week I did not get disappointed, in fact it exceeded my expectations.

The Candy Cane

The candy cane is the shape,
Of a shepherd’s crook
Because the shepherds were the first,
The angels told to look
At the Christ, God made man,
Who came to save everyone
Who repents of their sins
And believes in God’s Son.
Red is like our hearts of sin,
Ourselves we cannot save
But that can be washed to white when we ask,
Because Jesus his life gave.

Our family went to The Master plan Conference, a Homeschool camp a while ago. Most families had a cabin each, somewhere on top of the hill, the place is aptly named Ridgecrest. The view towards the nearby lake is magnificent. And only one of the many great things about the weekend.
One day a man was given a clay jar into his care. At first he kept it with all his other jars on one side of the room. But this jar was different to all the rest. Now this man lived in the darkness, and hated all light. This particular clay jar emitted a faint glow that none of his others did. For a while he bore with the unnatural presence, keeping his back to the jar and moving it to a shelf in the darkest corner he could find, hiding it behind other jars. But the light did not flicker, and it had a presence he could feel all the time. Hate for the light of the clay jar grew in him until he decided he had to put it out.

I have only read three books from this series -Tales of Goldstone Wood by Anne Elisabeth Stengl- but they are all really good and I want to read the rest of the books too. Heartless is the first book in the series, Starflower is the fourth and Draven's Light is number seven and a half. They are fantasy books, in which lurk dragons and other evil powers, which are trying destroy the world or capture peoples hearts, but also there are brave men and women of courage. It made me think of this quote by C. S. Lewis;

“Since it is so likely that (children) will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker.

I experienced one of those rare magic moments today. I felt as though a portal to some fantasy place had opened for a minute. The experience just seemed too wonderful to belong in this worlds realm. It was kind of like a glimpse of heaven.

I just wanted to say one thing today, ask one question.

Time

is a

Precious Gift

How are you going to use it?

I have set mine eyes upon snow twice in my life. Just a week ago the second time came around. At the beginning of the day we were rather in doubt as to whether the weather would be horrid or not. The predictions spoke of rain, and we did not even know if there would be any snow left, from all the falls on the weekend when everything on Barrington Tops had got covered in a heavy shroud of snow. We set off despite all dire predictions, as we had planed... well rather spontaneously the night before.

The juices in my mouth stopped squishing in sweet flavoursome bursts at every chew and no longer slipped smoothly down my throat to fill my stomach in a satisfactory way. The soft pulpy fruit turned hard after a few mouthfuls and the liquid that ran from it, down my arm, began to feel sticky and dirty.
I chewed harder; my teeth grating together, with a gulp, another mouthful of the fruit scratched its way to fill the pit of my stomach, sharp edges catching at my throat. Yet I cannot stop. My jaws keep working and again I swallow... I swallow what feels like rocks picked up from beside a path, gravel.

Here is a small fact to think on:

~ You are going to live forEVER ~

Or to put it another way

~ Your soul is IMMORTAL ~

After you leave your body
you will continue to live....
but where?
there are only two options
and this is not an either or fallacy
it is fact
now is the time to chose where you will spend eternity

As I stole out of the house and down the silent streets a poem by Banjo Paterson echoed through my head. I memorized it years ago and it came flooding back as it played out in real life before me.

Sunrise on the Coast A.B. "Banjo" Paterson

Grey dawn on the sand-hills -- the night wind has drifted
All night from the rollers a scent of the sea;
With the dawn the grey fog his battalions has lifted,
At the call of the morning they scatter and flee.

Like mariners calling the roll of their number
The sea-fowl put out to the infinite deep.
And far over-head -- sinking softly to slumber --
Worn out by their watching, the stars fall asleep.

To eastward, where resteth the dome of the skies on
The sea-line, stirs softly the curtain of night;
And far from behind the enshrouded horizon
Comes the voice of God saying "Let there be light."

And lo, there is light! Evanescent and tender,
It glows ruby-red where 'twas now ashen-grey;
And purple and scarlet and gold in its splendour --
Behold, 'tis that marvel, the birth of a day!

The second half of Proverbs 19:14 says; “a prudent wife is from the LORD.”

This verse has sat amongst many others on the wall in our bathroom for years, but as I read it again the other day a thought struck me. Exactly what it a prudent wife? Well prudent has something to do with careful and um maybe wise um I didn’t really know, so I decided to look it up. Prudent is not a word we use particularly often, actually I can’t think of when I have ever used it. The definition of prudent is; acting with or showing care and thought for the future. That is a bit more than just being careful. Prudent seems to involve planning for the future as well as being careful now.

One day I want to be from the Lord for the man God has chosen for me so knowing what prudent means is quite important. I have also looked up some synonyms for prudent. It is similar to wise, well judged, shrewd, well advised and commonsensical. I do really like that last one, I had no idea commonsensical was a word! So just a few things to think on, if you one day want to be a prudent wife who is from the Lord.
