Deep Snow is Deep Snow

To read of and glimpse the first part of the day read this post. For the second part, all you have to do is continue on.

And now for the second part of snow photos.

Did you know that lemonade is cold? And if it sits in snow for a while it only gets colder? And if the air all around you is cold, that makes it colder still?

Yes, we were rather mad to be drinking it and not something warm.... but we were. Another interesting thing would be that snow makes lemonade fizz more. We found that out when my dad poured some lemonade into his cup, which he had not managed to tip quite all the snow out of (snow that had somehow got into his cup). When tipped into our other cups the lemonade just went in fizzing normally, but with his, it attempted to all get out in little specks of fizz.

We also tried just sprinkling a little snow into our cups and that also made them fizz like mad.

After that I decided I wanted to eat some snow....ice.... So I scooped the top off a pile of it and put some of the cleaner stuff into a pot... thing (in the picture above). We melted it and drank it, it tasted like water..... but with other odd flavors that I could not really describe. I also ate a bit while it was still ice..... I really would not want to live on that crunchy, cold stuff.

And we toasted marshmallows..... on the gas cooker..... and ate them with chocolate and biscuits. And just ate chocolate by itself.

Ann could not decide if she did like the 'now or not.

If you can't tell, that above photo is of wombat tracks. You can just make out the claw marks. I followed the trail for a while, but soon gave it up.

And well Ann is just cute.

Just before we went, I got Alice to get a few photos of me, so you could tell I was there..... at least by seeing me in a photo and not just behind the camera all the time. (yes I was wearing a jacket most of the time)

My brothers and Ann were already packed into the car to warm up (they had got wet feet).  So my dad finished his snowman and we headed back down the mountains.

The photo below is probably one of my favourites. Even though there is no snow in it... only puddles that once were.

These pools that, though in forests, still reflect
The total sky almost without defect,
And like the flowers beside them, chill and shiver,
Will like the flowers beside them soon be gone,
And yet not out by any brook or river,
But up by roots to bring dark foliage on.
The trees that have it in their pent-up buds
To darken nature and be summer woods---
Let them think twice before they use their powers
To blot out and drink up and sweep away
These flowery waters and these watery flowers
From snow that melted only yesterday.
-Robert Frost (Spring Pools)

The poem does not quite go, but still, the pools from snow that melted only yesterday reminded me of it.

We left the mist behind and drove past more cloud covered mountains on the way home.

Soon though, it began to get dark and mists returned again, hovering just below the fence line and rising slowly, winding their way along flats and rising higher in valleys or over rivers.

Just before it got really dark I swapped with daddy and drove on, through towns, lit with many coloured lights, along highways, beside speeding cars (literally), until finally we arrived home, safe and sound, just in time for tea.
