Visitor in the Night

By 10:40:00 , ,

A while ago we had a visitor in the night. One of my sisters spied the possum in the tree and so I went out to take photos. I used a tripod and a torch. I had the camera taking long exposure shots on a timer so that my pressing of the shutter would not bump the camera while it took the photo. Then I also had two hands to 'paint' the possum and tree with torch light. The cool thing about using a torch is that I could make the light come from a different angle than the camera or even two angles, by moving around and shining the torch from different sides during the exposure. I had to be careful not to keep the torch in one place to long though because otherwise it got overexposed!

Using a flash would also probably make the possums eyes glow red. I did have that happen in one of the photos but not the rest. I have never got such a clear photo of a wild possum before so I was rather happy with these.

Do you have possums around your place?
Have you ever tired light painting photography?

  1. Possums are so cute sometimes...and such nuisances other times! It is pretty cool to be able to see them up close though. :)
You did really well with those photos! They turned out really clear even in the dark.

  2. Ohhh these are nice!! Night photos are SO HARD so basically...*stops to applaud you wildly* AHEM. ;D 😂 We do have possums where I live, but more koalas. Which are downright freaky at night, omg. They growl and rage a lot right outside my bedroom window which is kind of terrifying hehe. I also get a lot of wallabies! And once a fox. 😳 I never manage to capture good photos though, but maybe one day....

    1. Thanks, Possums also sometimes make weird noises outside the window, Not particularly loud though. I have never heard a Koala but I do know they can make loud noises, that would be quite creepy if you were alone.. But mostly the possums just destroy out lovely trees by eating every single leaf of them and snapping the branches. We have a tone of wallabys and kangaroos and sometimes foxes too.

  3. You Australians are lucky. I have opossums yes, but they look nothing like this cute little guy. More like a skull attached to the body of a drowned rat. That's about what they act like too. They are creepy, vicious, and delight in eating both chickens and their eggs. The have a very freaky hiss to top it all off.
Great job taking the pictures! It's impressive what a good shot you were able to get of him in the dark!

    1. I like your description of opossums :P They sound very creepy, and horrible, how dare they eat the chickens! I am glad I only have to deal with foxes in that regard. Though we have the goannas and ravens that steal the eggs.

I was pretty amazed the the possum stayed in the same spot just staring at me taking the photos for so long it did not eve run away at the end! I just finished and went back inside before the mosquitoes drained all my blood.

    2. I forgot to mention that they have large sharp teeth. Not exactly the nighttime creature I hope to stumble across in the dark--yes, I know that from personal experience.

By the way, I just tagged you for the Top Ten Villains Tag if you have never done it before!

  6. Wow those are really fantastic photos! There are exactly zero possums where I live (except maybe in the zoo, but that doesn't count). They are really cute critters, though! I especially like how the ears stick out. :)

  7. What a cutie pie! We don't get (or at least see) many possums around these parts, but many, many years ago (let's say about 26 - 27), when I was a little girl we had one take up residence in the flower in our front yard and my brother and I delighted in watching it from our balcony. It hung out most in the rhododendrons and as such we nicknamed it "Blossom the Awesome Possum" (which now, as an adult, strikes me a good name, fittingly, for a children's book). I can't see or think about these nocturnal critters without my mind instantly racing to that fun memory.

    1. That is such a lovely memory! Blossom the Awesome Possum would indeed make a great book title. Your memory reminds me of the wallaby that we named Dorothy because it ate our roses and spent nearly the whole day in our front gardens, it was so tame, you could not pat it but you could get very close, she was such a sweet little thing.
