What Television Has Done To Us

By 12:03:00 , ,

Australian Bureau of Statistics data has revealed Australians spend the equivalent of one month a year sitting watching television. Sedentary leisure activities such as this cause higher rates of obesity in people, especially children. Hours are wasted which we could spend in a more godly pursuit, Colossians 4:5 “Walk in wisdom towards outsiders, making the best use of the time.” And it says in Revelation 12:12 “Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” His time is short, soon our saviour will return and we will have to answer for how we used all the years God has given us. Do we really want to tell him we spent as many hours as we do watching television?

Television has caused us to develop short attention spans, if a program is not interesting we just flick to another channel. This can have an effect on our ability to communicate with one another, especially in listening to others. Listening is a very important skill to have. Computers also have the same effects if not worse as they can really do all a television can and more.

Many of the shows that can be easily accessed on the television are not God honouring. They are full of the things of this evil world, bad morals, beliefs, living, and treatment of others. On a computer it is even easier to access anything we want to and things we don’t want to as well. We are told to do what Philippians 4:8 says “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Television often does not encourage such thinking.

Studies also show that television can be bad for our eyes and brains, especially for young people. Matthew 6:22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” We see many things that others have on television and naturally we covert them and this brings dissatisfaction in what we have already been blessed with.

Computers give access to the internet which is so full of information it can overload our minds. It is good for research but often what we can find there, is less accurate, because anyone can say anything. Some internet users can claim to know about something when they really don’t and miss inform other people. On a television there is less content, and it is more accurate.

Television is of this world, we are not. It encourages us to conform to this world and this is not something we want to be tempted to do. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” Doesn’t this sound like now?

Television and computers have changed the way many families spend time together. A family used to play card or board games together, talk together or all sit around the radio and listen to it, imagining the scenes in their heads. Now families spend a lot less time together. Now each family member will often be in a different room each watching a different channel or on their personal computers. The PCs are even more isolating than television as they are only meant to be used by one at a time.

But I must say television itself is not evil, but it contains many evil things and influences. It can be very informative and through it we can learn about many things of the world around us. It informs us of the needs of the word, so we then have the choice to act. It is good as a form of entertainment, but we must be careful, we must use our time wisely Ephesians 5:15-17 “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

As afore mentioned anyone can say anything on the internet, especially in places like blogs....
